Heart Shaped Thrums

I have been making the same mitten patter for, well, as long as I’ve been knitting mittens. It’s the pattern my grandmother taught me to make and I was so proud when I was given my very own copy of the pattern book

By knitting little bits of unspun yarn (roaving) into the mittens, you get cute heart shaped stitches on the outside and warm fuzzy fluff on the inside. As you wear the mittens the roaving felts and becomes almost penetrable – the power of thrums

I took this pair out for a spin just the other day – it was a balmy 25 degrees before the wind chill. I have to admit that my hands stayed toasty warm.

I added thrums every 4th row, alternating between the first stitch and the 3rd stitch to get the staggered look.

If you make a pair or two, I’d love to see them. You can post pics here or on Facebook
