A Mixed Bag

So last weekend had temperatures in the single digits and just yesterday it was in the 40’s! The view from my workshop still says winter

For this weeks hat, we get to pull out our knitting needles AND our crochet hooks to whip up this mixed bag hat.

I used a crochet hook 1 size large than I was going to work with since I found that the foundation row was a little snug if I used my working hook.

With an “I” hook, chain 42 and join with a slip stitch. Now switch to the “H” hook and complete the brim rounds as follows

Round 1: ch 2, hdc around, slip st to join – 42  st

Rounds 2 – 4 : ch 2, hdc into the 3rd loop, join with a slip st

With size 8 knitting needle, pick up 48 stitches through the 3rd loop,

Knit unit hat is a total of 5” tall

To begin the decrease, place 3 markers evenly spaced

Decrease round: K2tog, k to last 2 stitches before marker, k2tbl

Repeat the decrease round until 6 st remain.

Cut and pull through

Tuck ends

I added a little flower for a feel of spring to the newborn and toddler sized hats, but left the preemie plain. I like the look of the crochet edge and knit body. And while I do love a little swirl at the top of hats when you decrease, this was a nice change up.

I hope you enjoyed this weeks hat. Don’t forget, every sale this month means that a Joshua Beanie will be donated to a preemie, and hats are priced to sell through the end of the month.
